"Somewhere" the boom mic mystery

I just saw Sophia Coppola's new movie "Somewhere" starring Stephen Dorff. It was good, pretty much what I expected from all the reviews and articles I had read about it, but there was something very strange about this movie watching experience; THE BOOM MIC CO-STARRED. No joke, that thing was visible over a dozen times in the movie!!!

So here is the mystery; I searched the internet for references to this and found NONE. But when I was leaving the theater three people complained to the staff about it on their way out. It was incredibly distracting. Watching it I could not believe that it could possibly be accidental, that just seems so sloppy and lazy, but what would be the purpose of choosing to showcase the boom mic in the film?

I saw the film at the Harvard Exit, is this something the theater usually hides? I don't know if that is something the theater has control over. Does anyone have any insight into this?

I need to solve the Case of the Boom Mic Mystery.

  1. Sorry to comment on such an old post... when I watched the movie in theatres, I noticed this as well. However, when I watched it on Blu-ray last night, I didn't see it at all. For a moment, I thought maybe I watched a special messed-up post-production reel or something, but now I know that other people have seen this.

As for *why*... here is my "theory." Johnny--actor by profession--sort of always "in-character": looking cool and playing cool, alluring all of the women, etc. But the moment I remember with exceptional boom mic was when he was just alone smoking in his living room.

And since the whole film is in homage to Antonioni (and maybe a bit autobiographical--Sofia Coppola's father is a famous filmmaker, after all) it makes perfect sense that this is subtly a film about film. When Johnny does the press interview about the movie he stars in, they ask him some pretty interesting questions that seem to point to Somewhere itself, since we don't really know anything about the film Johnny is in (though the poster makes it look like a pretty ridiculous movie).

Anyway. Hope this wasn't a dumb comment.
