Predicting the Globes 3 hours before they air...

Golden Globes

Personally I am more of an Oscars fan, and wasn't really thinking much about Golden Globes, but as I wait to go over to a friends to watch the show I figured I would make some predictions.

BEST PICTURE(drama): BLACK SWAN
BEST ACTRESS(drama): Natalie Portman
BEST ACTOR(drama): Colin Firth
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Amy Adams
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Christian Bale
BEST PICTURE(comedy): THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT
BEST ACTRESS(comedy): Annette Bening
BEST ACTOR(comedy): ??????Paul Giamatti????

These are NOT what I want to win, but what I predict WILL win tonight. I pretty much have no clue for actor in comedy or musical so I am pretty much making a blind guess. I am hoping Johnny Depp doesn't win because both his movies were bad, but it seems like he wins for everything he does these days so maybe he will.

BLACK SWAN is my guess for Best drama but it might get beat by SOCIAL NETWORK or maybe even THE KINGS SPEECH although the globes tend to be a little less traditional in taste so I think KING won't win.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT is pretty much a sure bet because the other nominations in that catagory are weak. I am thinking Bening will win because she is considered so good and never wins.
Those are my guesses...lets see how I do!!!

My Favorite Director

Michael Haneke
"My films are intended as polemical statements against the American 'barrel down' cinema and its dis-empowerment of the spectator. They are an appeal for a cinema of insistent questions instead of false (because too quick) answers, for clarifying distance in place of violating closeness, for provocation and dialogue instead of consumption and consensus."

-- From "Film as catharsis".

Michael Haneke was born in Germany but raised in Austria. He made his director debut in television at the age of 32. His first feature film, THE SEVENTH CONTINENT, came out in 1989.
Words often used to describe his films are; bleak, bold and disturbing. He mostly deals with problems and break downs of modern society. Media is a popular theme in his films along with class relations and, of course, violence.

Below is a list of Haneke's films ranked from my favorite to not favorite. Although I find each of them to be amazing works of art and worth watching, some of them I have a higher appreciation for. The top 5 all impressed me greatly and have stayed with me the longest.
Haneke made his film FUNNY GAMES twice, the first time in Austria and then again in the United States. I ranked them together because they are very similar and the acting in both is exceptional. I suppose I would suggest the original to a person trying to choose between the two, although the American version is in English, which is preferable to some people I suppose, and it is still as powerful.
The last four either made less of an impression, or in the case of BENNY'S VIDEO, disturbed me enough that I will find it hard to ever watch again.

"Somewhere" the boom mic mystery

I just saw Sophia Coppola's new movie "Somewhere" starring Stephen Dorff. It was good, pretty much what I expected from all the reviews and articles I had read about it, but there was something very strange about this movie watching experience; THE BOOM MIC CO-STARRED. No joke, that thing was visible over a dozen times in the movie!!!

So here is the mystery; I searched the internet for references to this and found NONE. But when I was leaving the theater three people complained to the staff about it on their way out. It was incredibly distracting. Watching it I could not believe that it could possibly be accidental, that just seems so sloppy and lazy, but what would be the purpose of choosing to showcase the boom mic in the film?

I saw the film at the Harvard Exit, is this something the theater usually hides? I don't know if that is something the theater has control over. Does anyone have any insight into this?

I need to solve the Case of the Boom Mic Mystery.

HANNA cool new movie trailer

I saw this preview yesterday before "Somewhere". Never heard of it before, I guess it opens in the Spring. It looks super cool and its about a girl who kicks ass! And it has an awesome cast! And it will have awesome music! I can't wait to see it!
